Temptation shapes dishonesty and can alter working memory

چکیده
Abstract This study shows that participants tend to remember an ambiguous, directional cue as biased towards stimuli associated with a high reward can be attained dishonestly. Participants saw eight digits presented in circular arrangement. On some trials, they were asked report the digit (“Target Digit”) indicated by jittery was slightly direction of another (“Second Cued Digit”), which either higher or lower than Target Digit. paid based on reported (higher meant pay) and not accuracy their report. In this setting, could make self-serving mistakes dishonestly reporting Second Digit when it Replicating prior work, frequently made such mistakes. other after disappeared, reproduce cue, without receiving any pay. Results showed participants’ reports more toward high-rewarding low-rewarding digits. research provides preliminary evidence link between attention, dishonesty, memory, offering important constraint for theories behavioral ethics.

Visual working memory for amplitude-modulated shapes.
We investigated the trade-off between capacity and precision in visual working memory with two different tasks: delayed discrimination and recall. The stimuli were radial frequency patterns that require global pooling of local visual features. The thresholds in delayed amplitude discrimination were measured with a two-interval, forced-choice setup using the Quest procedure. In the recall experi...
متن کاملHuman working memory for shapes of radial frequency patterns
We investigated the human working memory for contour shapes. The memory items were radial frequency patterns (Wilkinson, Wilson, & Habak, 1998), which require global pooling of local contour orientation at the 'intermediate' levels of visual system. We used change-detection paradigm and d' measure to determine the forgetting of a single pattern as a function of a retention interval, and the sto...
متن کاملWorking memory can guide pop-out search
Top-down feedback from working memory (WM) can exert an early and involuntary influence on visual selection for targets that are relatively difficult to discriminate [Soto, D., Heinke, D., Humphreys, G. W., & Blanco, M. J. (2005) Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 31, 248]. Here, we demonstrate similar effects even on search for a pop-out target. At the beginn...
متن کاملCan working memory be non-conscious?
Working memory (WM) is closely linked to conscious awareness: In most conceptions of WM, the inputs to WM need to be conscious. The findings of some recent studies, however, have been taken to suggest that WM can indeed operate on non-conscious inputs. Here, we argue that these findings can easily be accommodated by conventional conceptions of non-conscious perception and conscious WM. We concl...
متن کاملCan delay-period activity explain working memory?
Working-memory tasks often lead to elevated delay-period discharge rates in cortical neurons. When this altered neuronal discharge rate, called delay activity, shows stimulus specificity, it is a good candidate for a neuronal mechanism of working memory. If the delay activity is indeed the carrier of memory, then experimental manipulation during the delay period that disrupts delay activity sho...
